Abstract

Introduction :
Gastrointestinal endoscopy is a medical examination that allows accurate diagnosis of gastrointestinal lesions, enables biopsies to confirm certain macroscopic findings, and provides the possibility of therapeutic procedures. This study aimed to assess the contribution of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in the management of oesophagogastroduodenal conditions at the Maradi Referral Hospital (HRM).

Methodology :
We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional study based on retrospective data from endoscopy reports and the gastrointestinal endoscopy registry over three years, from July 2021 to June 2024.

Results :
During the study period, 1,972 gastrointestinal endoscopies were performed, including 1,418 upper endoscopies, of which 1,337 (67.80%) met our inclusion criteria. The mean age was 44.46 ± 16.16 years, with a slight male predominance (sex ratio = 1.19). The main indication was chronic epigastric pain (59.91%). Lesions were found in 1,224 patients (91.55%), with a mainly gastric location (84.44%). The predominant endoscopic findings were inflammatory lesions, mainly gastritis, observed in 71.35% of cases. Biopsies were performed in 426 patients (31.86%), of whom 282 (66.20%) underwent histopathological analysis. This examination revealed malignant lesions in 17.73% of cases and benign lesions in 82.27%.

Conclusion :
Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is a reliable examination with high diagnostic value, contributing significantly to improving the management of oesophagogastroduodenal pathologies.
