Abstract
Introduction :
Limb amputation is a radical procedure that significantly impacts an individual's life. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of major limb amputations and analyze their consequences in 64 patients treated at the Ziniaré Regional Hospital.
Patients and Methods :
This was a descriptive, retrospective, single-center cohort study conducted at the Ziniaré Regional Hospital on patients who underwent major amputation between December 2021 and December 2024. Data were collected from medical records and supplemented by telephone interviews.
Results :
A total of 64 patients were included (mean age: 44.37 ± 23 years; sex ratio: 4.33). The primary causes were chronic diseases (42.19%), led by diabetes complications (29.69%), and trauma (40.62%). Trans-tibial amputation was the most frequent (65.63%). Only 32.81% of patients received a prosthesis. Although 85.94% resumed daily living activities, only 31.25% returned to their previous occupations.
Conclusion :
Major amputations and their consequences remain a major health concern. Key solutions rely on improving prosthetic accessibility and providing comprehensive psychological support.
