Abstract

Introduction :
Perinatal asphyxia of the newborn is one of the most frequently encountered pathologies in the neonatology unit of the Maradi Mother and Child Health Center. The aim of our work was to study the epidemio-clinical aspects of perinatal asphyxia in the term newborn to help improve care.

Materials and method :
This was a cross-sectional descriptive study with retrospective temporality over a period of 2 years, from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2022, at the Maradi Mother and Child Health Center. All term neonates (37-41 weeks) with an Apgar score less than 7 at the 5th minute were included.

Results :
The hospital frequency was 11.26%. The average weight was 2943.59 g. The Apgar score was < 3 at the 5th minute in 38 newborns (5.8%), between 3 and 4 in 191 newborns (29.1%), and between 5 and 6 in 427 newborns (65.1%). The average age of mothers was 26.21 years. 51.8% of mothers had less than 4 CPNs. The main associated obstetric complications were abruptio placentae (10.1%) and toxemia of pregnancy (10.5%). According to Sarnat's classification, the severity of brain damage was at stage II in 34.3% of cases. The case fatality rate was 9.75%.

Conclusion :
Perinatal asphyxia is relatively common with a high lethality rate in the neonatology unit of the Maradi Mother and Child Health Center. Regular monitoring of the pregnancy and correct management of childbirth are necessary to prevent asphyxia and its complications.
