Abstract
Introduction :
Pneumothorax is a frequent condition in pneumology. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiological and evolutionary aspects of spontaneous pneumothorax at the Hôpital National Amirou Boubacar Diallo (HNABD) in Niamey, Niger.
Patients and method :
This was a cross-sectional study with prospective collection over a one-year period from December 2020 to November 2021. It concerned patients with spontaneous pneumothorax managed in the Pneumo-phtisiology department of the Niamey HNABD.
Results :
We included 28 patients, representing a frequency of 3.3%. Males accounted for 78.6% (n=22) and the mean age was 42.46 years. Smoking was present in 44.44% (n=12) of patients. The main reasons for consultation were dyspnea 96.43% (n=27), chest pain 75% (n=21) and cough 60.71% (n=17). Signs of clinical severity were present in 21% (n=6). Pneumothorax was complete in 50% (14) and located on the right side in 64.29% (n=18). It was primary in 60.17% (n=17) of patients. Thoracic drainage was performed in 67.9% (n=19) of cases. After drain removal, 89.47% (n=17) of patients had a healthy lung. Two patients (7.20%) had undergone thoracic surgery. The average hospital stay was 15.43 days. One patient (3.6%) died, and there was one case of recurrence (3.6%).
Conclusion :
Spontaneous pneumothorax is an infrequent occurrence. Primary spontaneous pneumothorax is the most common. And the main etiology of secondary pneumothorax is infectious.
