Abstract

Introduction :
The risk of transmission of viral hepatitis B and C is significant not only in the general population in Africa but especially in prisons due to promiscuity and risky behavior of prisoners. The objective of this study was to describe prisoners' knowledge and practices regarding viral hepatitis (B and C), and to determine their serological status.

Methodology :
This was a cross-sectional study over a period of 70 days. Included in the study were adult prisoners of both sexes who wanted to participate. Statistical tests were considered significant when the p-value ≤ 0.05. We also calculated Chi2.

Results :
In total, 138 detainees were investigated. This prison population was young, the average age was 31.02 years ±10.352 with extremes of 18 and 69 years. The male sex predominated with a rate of 89.1%, resulting in a sex ratio (men/women) of 8.2. Among the participants, 11.6% had knowledge of the mode of transmission of these viral hepatitis and up to 58% of participants had a notion of sharing personal hygiene objects, kitchen and catering utensils. However, no practice of sexual relations in prison has been reported by prisoners. Participants with positive hepatitis B serology represented 17.4% and no cases of positive serology were found for hepatitis C.

Conclusion :
the prison population represents an environment at high risk of contamination of viral hepatitis. Few prisoners had any knowledge of their modes of transmission. Many of them engaged in behaviors that could spread these diseases. This population must be subject to rigorous surveillance by the program responsible for combating viral hepatitis.
