Abstract

Introduction :
Violence in the workplace is commonplace. The health sector is no exception. The aim of this study was to describe the acts of violence suffered by health workers in the psychiatry department of the Nation Hospital in Niamey.

Methodology :
This was a cross-sectional study conducted over a 3-month period in the psychiatry department of Niamey National Hospital. Health workers who had worked in the department between 2015 and 2021 were concerned. All aggressors and healthcare workers who were victims of violence in the department were included. The variables studied were socio-demographic data; the circumstances, different types and consequences of acts of violence; clinical and administrative arrangements in the event of an assault on a healthcare worker. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire that had been drawn up, tested and validated beforehand.

Results :
a total of 60 health workers were surveyed. The average age of the respondents was 39.48% with extremes ranging from 23 to 55 years. 55% of respondents were female with a M/F sex ratio of 0.81. Senior mental health technicians represented 60% of victims. The typical attacker was a male (58.33%), who suffers from psychosis associated with the consumption of psychoactive substances (45%) and most often admitted for assault on those around him (58.33). The most reported type of aggression was physical (96.68%). Verbal aggression was reported in 83.34%; it involved insults and death threats. Two victims had declared their attack to the hospital administration. Victims had benefited from psychosocial support in 5% of cases Conclusion: this study reveals a high frequency of physical and verbal violence. Policies and strategies for the prevention and management of violence in psychiatric services must be put in place.
