Abstract
Introduction :
Bronchial asthma is a chronic disease of allergic origin. Its prevalence varies from 4% to 22% depending on the country. The aim was to study the knowledge and practices of health workers in the Zinder region regarding bronchial asthma.
Methodology :
This was a cross-sectional study carried out among health workers in Zinder over a 12-month period from June 2022 to May 2023. Data were collected using an individual questionnaire previously drawn up and ready tested. Data analysis was performed using Epi Info software version 7.1.3.1.
Results :
A total of 150 agents were included, 82 men and 68 women, with a sex ratio of 1.2. The average age of respondents was 34.36 ± 9.39 years. Doctors, medical residents, nurses and midwives accounted for 29.33%, 33.34% and 37.33% respectively. Those who defined bronchial asthma as an inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract represented 93 62% of the agents surveyed. In 139 agents (92.66%), asthma was linked to exposure to dust. The cold season was incriminated in 56.67% of agents as the period of occurrence of exacerbations. In 51.33% of cases, the differential diagnosis of asthma was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Respiratory infections were reported as exacerbation factors in 81.33% of cases. Asthma was diagnosed on the basis of clinical signs in 80.66% of cases, and 24.00% of those surveyed were diagnosed with COPD. Respiratory infections were reported as exacerbation factors in 81.33% of cases. Asthma diagnosis was based on clinical signs in 80.66% of cases, and 24.00% of respondents referred to spirometry. 77.33% of healthcare workers were aware that bronchial asthma attacks were treated with inhaled products. The availability of medication for the treatment of bronchial asthma was a problem for 88.66%.
Conclusion :
Asthma is a disease well known to health workers at Zinder Hospital, but its management remains a challenge.
