Abstract

Introduction :
Perinatal asphyxia (PCA) is the 3rd leading cause of infant mortality in the world. The objective of our study is to assess the short-term prognosis of AFN in neonatology at the Mother Child Health Center (CSME) in Diffa (Niger).

Materials and methods :
this is a descriptive retrospective study of newborns hospitalized for asphyxiation at the Diffa CSME for perinatal asphyxia during the period from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019 (2 years).

Results :
The incidence of AFN was 7.38%. The majority (n = 91; 53%) of mothers were between 20 and 34 years old. The average length of hospitalization was 6 days (range: 1 and 25 days). The 5th minute Apgar of neonates was <4 in 46.05% (n = 80) of cases. Mortality was 38.37% (n = 66) and the factors of poor prognosis were: primiparity [p=0.031; OR: 1.82; CI: 0.9-3.4], premature limb rupture (RPM) [p=0.000; OR: 9.9; CI: 4.29-22.96]; toxemia of pregnancy [p=0.000; OR: 3.9; CI: 2.03-7.55] and convulsion [p=0.000; OR: 5.43; CI: 2.7510.73].

Conclusion :
AFN represents a serious pathology. She is grafted with a high death rate. The main risk factors for lethality were primiparity, lack of pregnancy follow-up, toxemia of pregnancy, RPM and seizure.
