Abstract

Introduction :
Natural medicines, particularly those based on medicinal plants, have long been the main, or even the only, means used by traditional medicine to treat pathologies. The aim of this study was to investigate the phytochemistry of three medicinal plants from the traditional Nigerien pharmacopoeia, Annona senegalensis L., Boscia senegalensis (Pers.) Lam. and Ampelocissus africana (Lour.) Merr.

Materials and methods :
It was an experimental and prospective study. The plant material consisted of five samples: leaves and root bark of A. senegalensis L., leaves and root bark of B. senegalensis (Pers Lam) and roots of A. africana (Lour) Merr. For all five samples, water extraction and 80% ethanol maceration methods were used. The levels of polyphenols and flavonoids were determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu and aluminium trichloride methods respectively.

Results :
The chromatograms obtained indicate that the phytocompounds present in the samples are more soluble in ethanol than in water. The polyphenol content was higher in the Annona senegalensis leaf extract with a value of 787.58 ± 30.84 mgEAG/g and the flavonoid content was higher in the Annona senegalensis root bark extract with 69 ± 18.07 mgEQ/g.

Conclusion :
This study showed the presence of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids and polyphenols. It would therefore be desirable to carry out a more in-depth phytochemical study to identify the active ingredients of these plants and prove the relevance of their medicinal use.
