Abstract

Introduction :
Infections are a major cause of male infertility. The asymptomatic nature of certain germs delays treatment, leading to often irreversible consequences. The aim of this study was to investigate the spermiological and bacteriological aspects of sperm at the Magori polyclinic in Niamey.

Materials and method :
This was a cross-sectional descriptive study with retrospective and prospective data collection from November 1, 2022 to October 31, 2023. All patients who underwent spermogram, sperm culture and/or sperm PCR at the Magori polyclinic in Niamey were included. For the spermogram, the SCA evolution system was used (semi automated analysis). Gene Xpert and conventional bacteriology were used. Data analysis was performed using Sphinx software version 5.1.0.4, and data entry was performed using Microsoft Office (Excel and Word 2019).

Results :
A total of 71 patients were included in the study, including 56 with retrospective data collection. In 15 patients, data were collected prospectively. Mean age was 37.2 ±8.4 years, with extremes of 18 and 60 years. Ninety-five percent of patients (n=68) were married, 88% of whom (n=60) were monogamous. Infertility was primary in 66.2% (n=47). Oligozoospermia represented 26.8% (n=19) and azoospermia 19.7% (n=14). Sperm culture was positive in 21.1% of cases (n=16). Staphylococcus aureus was found in 60% of cases (n=9).

Conclusion :
The use of spermograms to study sperm parameters in the investigation of male infertility is well established. In this work, we have listed the various abnormalities observed on spermograms in a population of men, most of whom were seen for infertility tests. We also combined sperm culture and PCR with the spermogram.
