Abstract

Introduction :
HIV is a worldwide public health problem. The aim was to evaluate the management of patients on second-line antiretroviral therapy. Patients and Methods: this was a cross-sectional descriptive multicenter study with retrospective recruitment of HIV-1-infected patients aged over 15 years on second-line antiretroviral therapy followed over a six-month period from July 2016 to January 2017. Data was collected exhaustively through patient records using a pre-established survey form.

Results :
a total of 233 patients were included in the study, 74.7% from outpatient treatment centers, female gender represented 63.1% with a sex ratio (F/H) of 1.7. The mean age of patients was 43.77 years [16-74 years]. The first-line antiretroviral regimen was AZT-3TC-NVP, prescribed in 71.3% of cases, while the second-line regimen was TDF-3TC-LPV/r, prescribed in 85.4% of cases. Immunovirological failure was noted in 59.7% of patients.

Conclusion :
therapeutic failure is a progressive process that must be prevented at every stage of treatment, particularly in the initial phase when solutions are always possible. It poses a public health problem, as it poses a threat to HIV/AIDS treatment programs.
