Abstract

Introduction :
since December 2019, the world has been confronted with a serious contemporary crisis which is Covid-19, Niger has not been spared. The aim was to study the epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and evolutionary characteristics of patients hospitalised for Covid-19.

Material and methods :
This was a cross-sectional study with retrospective collection for descriptive purposes of patients hospitalised for Covid-19 at the National Hôspital Amirou Boubacar Diallo (HNABD) in Niamey, Niger, over a period of 14 months (from 20 March 2020 to 03 May 2021).

Results :
A total of 115 (34.1%) patients were included out of 337 suspected cases. The mean age was 49.3 ±16 years, with males predominating (82.6%). The patients were mainly refugees (42.6%). In 21.7% of cases, patients were in contact with a suspected/confirmed case. 41.7% (n=48) of patients had at least one comorbidity, and arterial hypertension was found in 25.2% of cases. Fever, cough and dyspnoea were the clinical signs encountered in 44.4%, 38.3% and 33% of cases respectively. In 43.5% (n=50) of cases, patients were at a benign stage. Of the 25 (21.7%) scans performed, the extension of the CT lesions was severe in 48% (n=12) of cases. The combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin was used in 97.4% of cases. Mortality was 8.70%. According to the odds ratios (OR), there was a significant reduction in the chances of cure as the severity of the disease increased (severe vs moderate: OR=0.22; critical vs moderate: OR=0.05).

Conclusion :
Comorbidities and severity of symptoms were factors in the severity of the disease.
