Abstract
Introduction :
Eclampsia is a significant complication of pregnancy. It is an obstetric emergency with often enough maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity. The aim of this work was to describe the epidemiological, clinical and prognostic characteristics of eclampsia at the Maradi CSME.
Methodology :
This was a descriptive and cross-sectional retrospective study over a period of five years, from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2022 at the Maradi Mother and Child Health Center. It concerned all patients admitted for eclampsia attacks or who had manifested it at the CSME.
Results :
The frequency was 4.24%, the patients were young and primiparous (78%), under 20 years old (51.23%), married (99.35%), not in school (81.45%) and had had less than 4 consultations (60.83%). The reason for admission was eclampsia crisis in 74.57% of cases. The majority of patients were referred to peripheral health facilities (97.5% of cases). All patients benefited from magnesium sulphate alone or combined with diazepam (in 7.13% of cases). Clonidine is the most widely used antihypertensive drug with 35.01% of cases. Caesarean section is the most common mode of delivery with 81.97% of cases. Parturients who had caesarean section benefited from general anaesthesia in 75% of cases. Maternal deaths affected 9.99% of patients, and 8.4% of perinatal deaths were recorded.
Conclusion :
Eclampsia is a very common pathology in our regions. It is responsible for very high maternal-fetal mortality. Early detection during pregnancies and rapid treatment helps improve the prognosis
