Abstract

Introduction :
Intussusception in adults (IIA) is a rare entity. The objective of this study was to report the epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic aspects of IIA at the National Hospital of Zinder, Niger.

Materials and method :
This was a retrospective study from January 2013- June 2021 (8 years and 6 months). All adults treated for acute abdomen surgery whose aetiology was acute intussusception diagnosed preoperatively or intraoperatively were included in the study.

Results :
We collected 21 patients, ie a hospital frequency of 2.47 patients per year. The average age was 38 years (range: 17-63 years). Men made up 71.43%, or a sex ratio of 2.5. The median time to admission was 48 hours. Symptoms progressed chronically in 52.38% (n=11) and abdominal pain was a constant reason for consultation (100%). In 61.90% (n=13) of cases, abdominal pain was associated with occlusive syndrome. The median time to intervention was 6 hours. Intussusception was mixed, mainly involving ileocolic segments in 52.38% (n=11). The etiology of intussusception was tumor in 80.95% (n=17) of cases with benign tumors being more common (n=9). Inflammatory lesions dominated non-tumor conditions (9.5%; n=9). Hemicolectomy was the most common surgical procedure (n=11). Postoperative complications were found in 52.4% of cases (n=11), dominated by surgical site infections. The average length of stay was 11 days. Two cases of death were recorded (9.5%).

Conclusion :
Intussusception in adults is a rare pathology which mainly occurs in tumoral conditions. The ileocolic localizations are the most frequent in our context. The management is based on the resection of the intestinal segment concerned.
