Abstract
Introduction :
Ocular ultrasound can be used to supplement optical methods of exploring the eyeball when these are inaccessible. The aim of this study was to investigate the value of ultrasound in the management of ocular pathologies in the Ophthalmology Department of the Amirou Boubacar Diallo National Hospital in Niamey, Niger.
Materials and methods :
this was a cross-sectional study with prospective data collection over a six-month period a. All patients who underwent A-mode and/or B-mode ocular ultrasound during the study period were included.
Results :
In all, we collected 112 eyes from 102 patients, including 58 men and 44 women, giving a sex ratio of 1.31. The age group over 60 years was the most represented 59.00%. B mode ultrasonography was performed in 30% of patients (n=18), A+B-mode in 70.00% (n=71). Cataract was the main indication for B-mode ultrasound, with 68.62% (n=70), followed by trauma in 15.30% (n=16). B-mode ultrasound was normal in the majority of patients (71.84%, n=74). Among the abnormalities found, retinal detachment was the most frequent, accounting for 13.51%. For A-mode ultrasound, dioptric powers of 20-22 were the most common (mean = 20.27 D, extremes: 6.5 to 30.5 D).
Conclusion :
Ocular ultrasonography is a key examination in cases of disturbance of the transparent medium. cataract remains the main indication. of ocular ultrasonography and retinal detachment was the pathology most frequently found. The biometric value is standard in the majority of cases.
