Abstract

Introduction :
Supracondylar fractures (SCFs) of the humerus are common injuries in pediatric traumatology. Their surgical management is a therapeutic challenge. The objective of this work was to study the surgical management of supracondylar fractures in children at the National Hospital of Zinder (Niger).

Patients and methods :
This was a descriptive study with retrospective data collection over a 12-month period, involving children with CBC and managed surgically. The clinical and therapeutic aspects were studied.

Results :
we collected 27 patients. The mean age was 8.07 years with 81.48% (n=22) male. 70.37% of patients were enrolled in school (n=19). FSC was due to domestic accidents 37.04% (n=10). The left side was the most affected in 62.96% (n=17). Stages 3 and 4 accounted for 85.18% (n=23) of cases. All patients were operated on under general anesthesia by transtricipital posterior approach. After reduction, the fracture was stabilized by a crook or lateral pinout according to Judet. Elbow stiffness and compartment syndrome were the complications found in 18.52% (n=5) and 11.11% (n=3), respectively.

Conclusion :
Supracondylar fractures are frequent and characterized by a delay in diagnosis and treatment in our context. Notwithstanding these difficulties, surgical treatment gives satisfactory results.
