Abstract
Introduction :
The objective of this work is to evaluate compliance with anti-hypertensive treatment and its predictive factors for poor compliance in a group of hypertensive patients in Agadez, Niger.
Methodology :
We carried out a cross-sectional study using survey data over a period of five months, from March to July 2023 in the medicine and cardiology department of the Agadez regional hospital center in Niger. Patients aged 18 and over, followed and treated for hypertension for at least six months were included in the study. To assess compliance, we used the test developed and validated by GIRERD. The data was collected on a preestablished form. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS 20.0 software. A value of p<0.05 was defined as statistically significant.
Results :
In total, 153 patients were included in the study. The average age was 53.76 ± 13.17 years. There was a female predominance (51%) with a sex ratio of 0.96. Compliance was considered good in 20.3%, and poor in 54.2%. In 25.5%, there was a minimal compliance problem. 10.45% of patients were at the blood pressure target and uncontrolled hypertension was significantly linked to poor therapeutic compliance (p<0.01). Several factors were significantly associated with poor compliance: The age group of 60 years and over (p= 0.03), a low level of education (p= 0.04), a long-standing hypertension of more than 5 years (p= 0.01), the presence of progressive complications of hypertension (p= 0.02).
Conclusion :
This study revealed the low level of therapeutic compliance of hypertensive patients. Hence the importance of developing and integrating a therapeutic education program for hypertensive patients.
