Abstract

Introduction :
Meal disorders represent a major public health concern. Often, the agitation and aggressiveness of patients prompt their relatives to seek hospital care, which is generally considered a last resort. This study aimed to describe the epidemiological characteristics of mental disorders managed in the psychiatry department of the National Hospital of Zinder. Patients and Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted from July 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022, involving patients seen in psychiatry. The study included all patients admitted to the department for mental disorders during this period.

Results :
Out of 7,655 consultations, 513 cases of mental disorders were recorded, representing a prevalence of 6.7%. The average age of patients was 30.5 ± 4.7 years, with a predominance in the 25–30 age group (27.28%). Males accounted for 67.64% of the patients. The most common reasons for admission were psychomotor agitation (53.99%), delusional speech (22.80%), and logorrhea (13.06%). According to ICD-10, the main diagnoses were substance use disorders (57.11%), mood disorders (31.77%), and schizophrenia (10.33%). A combined haloperidolchlorpromazine treatment was administered to 96.88% of patients. In emergency situations, promethazine (76.85%) and diazepam (23.15%) were the most commonly used injectable medications. Carbamazepine was prescribed as a mood stabilizer in 95% of cases. Psychoeducation and supportive psychotherapy were provided in 83% of cases. A follow-up dropout rate of 15.01% was observed.

Conclusion :
Patients with mental disorders arrive at the hospital in an agitated state, requiring rapid intervention. This highlights the need to strengthen the capacity of emergency healthcare workers in managing psychiatric conditions.
