Abstract
Introduction :
Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare non-tumor histiocytosis, often confused with conditions such as tuberculosis or lymphoma. Its diagnosis is based on clinical, cytological, and histological criteria. The aim of this study was to report a case of RDD diagnosed by cytopathology.
Observation :
A 16-year-old adolescent presented with chronic cervical lymphadenopathy, associated with persistent fever, weight loss, and anemia. These symptoms persisted despite six months of anti-tuberculosis treatment. This therapeutic failure led to a workup, including lymph node cytology, which revealed a lymph node tissue with effaced architecture, showing diffuse sheets of histiocytes associated with lymphoplasmacytic cells and a few multinucleated giant cells. High power magnification showed characteristic images of emperipolesis. Histology and subsequent immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of Rosai-Dorfman disease.
Conclusion :
In the diagnosis of MRD in settings with limited technical resources, cytology is of great value in guiding the diagnosis. Cytopathology can help to resolve doubts in cases where diagnosis is difficult.
