Abstract

Objective :
to describe the indications and results of lower digestive endoscopy (LDE) at the Zinder National Hospital.

Materials and methods :
this was a retrospective data collection from January 2018 to December 2020. Included were the LDE reports, from the registers of the digestive endoscopy room.

Results :
The study included 440 reports out of a total of 474 LDEs. The mean age of the patients was respectively 31 ± 12.5 years, 38.4 ± 11.3 years and 50.1 ± 14.1 years for proctoscopy (n = 52), short colonoscopy (n = 261) and total colonoscopy (n = 127). Mean age was statistically associated with type of LDE (p <0001). The sex ratio was 3.54. Rectal bleeding (n = 201), proctalgia (n = 140) and abdominal pain (n = 53) were the indications of LDE found in 37.01%, 25.8% and 9.8% of cases, respectively. The presence of proctalgia was statistically associated with age under 45 years (ORIC95% = 2.2 [1.4-3.5], p = 0.0007). Before rectal bleeding, total colonoscopy was performed in 13.3% (n = 18) before 45 years old and in 50% (n = 33) after 45 years (ORIC95% = 9.4 [1.2-72]; p = 0.007). Recto-colic tumors were lesions statistically found during total colonoscopy after 45 years (ORIC95% = 2.75 [1.16-6.5]; p = 0.019). Histological examination confirmed 17 colonic adenocarcinomas.

Conclusion :
Proctologic signs, rectal bleeding and abdominal pain were the main indications for LDE. Full colonoscopy was often performed after 45 years. Hemorrhoids and inflammatory lesions were more common. Rectocolic cancers were more found after 45 years.

Dig Endosc.
