Abstract

Introduction :
Viral hepatitis B is a public health problem on a global scale. The objective of this work was to identify the factors associated with the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding Hepatitis B Virus infection among health school students in Labé.

Materials and methods :
This was a cross-sectional study with prospective data collection over a period of 3 months, involving health school students in Labé, across all fields of study, who were present on the day of the survey and freely agreed to answer our questionnaire. To collect data, we used a survey form to be filled out the same day in the presence of the investigator. A bivariate analysis was performed to search for statistically significant associations.

Results :
The students were predominantly female (75%), single (53.8%), and State Registered Nurses were the most represented (43.3%). More than half (58.7%) of the students had good knowledge of the transmission modes of the Hepatitis B virus, nearly 2/3 (67%) had good attitudes toward an HBV+ patient, and only 25% (1/4) had good practices. The factors associated with the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices in bivariate analysis were age, sex, level of study, and field of study.

Conclusion :
Hepatitis B constitutes a major occupational risk for health workers. Studies on the vaccination coverage rate and the degree of immunity should be considered to assess the level of immunization and thus the risk of contamination for these future health workers
