Abstract

Introduction :
Psoriasis is a chronic, relapsing, inflammatory dermatosis, diagnosed clinically, which affects 2 to 3% of the world population, primarily young adults. The objective of this study was to determine the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of psoriasis in the dermatology department of the National Hospital of Niamey (HNN).

Materials and methods :
This was a cross-sectional study with retrospective data collection over a 7-year period (from January 1, 2013, to December 31, 2019) in the Dermatology-Venereology department of the HNN.

Results :
In total, 54 cases of psoriasis were diagnosed out of 14,167 patients seen, representing a frequency of 0.38%. Men accounted for 72.2% (n = 39), giving a sex ratio of 2.4. The mean age was 44 years (range: 4 to 70 years). The mean duration before consultation was 7.6 years. The risk factors and comorbidities found were alcoholism (1.9%), tobacco use (1.9%), HIV infection (1.9%), diabetes (5.7%), and hypertension (2.8%). Pruritus was reported in 74% of cases. The clinical forms were plaque psoriasis (81.5%), erythrodermic psoriasis (14.8%), scalp psoriasis (1.9%), nail psoriasis (5.5%), palmoplantar psoriasis (3.7%), pustular psoriasis (1.9%), and arthropathic psoriasis (1.9%). The most observed lesion locations were: scalp (44.4%), knees (31.5%), legs (27.8%), and elbows (25.9%). In terms of paraclinical investigations, histology was only necessary in 5.5% of cases. Radiology in arthropathic psoriasis (1.9%) showed asymmetrical sacroiliitis.

Conclusion :
Psoriasis is a common dermatosis in our setting. Young adults are the most affected. Plaque psoriasis was the most frequent form. Several comorbidities and certain triggering factors are important factors in the exacerbation of psoriasis
