Abstract
Introduction :
Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized primarily by joint damage. In addition to its joint damage, rheumatoid arthritis, like any systemic disease, can affect other organs and tissues in the body. The objective of this study was to determine the epidemiological aspects of extra-articular manifestations (MEA) of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) at the Zinder National Hospital (HNZ), Niger.
Materials and method :
This was a descriptive and retrospective study conducted from May 1, 2019 to April 30, 2021 in the internal medicine department of Zinder National Hospital. It included all rheumatoid arthritis cases meeting the ACR / EULAR 2010 classification criteria with extra-articular manifestations (MEA).
Results :
Our sample consisted of 26 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The mean age of the patients was 51 years ± 12 years (range: 30–75 years). Women represented 84.61% (22 cases) the patients. Twenty-three patients (88.46%) were seropositive including 19 (73.07%) for rheumatoid factor and 4 (15.38%) for ACPA. MEAs were present in 20 (76.92%) patients. We recorded 13 cases (65 %%) of dry eye syndrome, 8 cases (40%) of rheumatoid skin nodules, 9 cases (45%) of anemia, 1 case (5%) of leukopenia without Felty's syndrome , 3 cases (15%) of hyperleukocytosis, 3 cases (15%) of thrombocytosis, 2 cases (10%) of thrombocytopenia, 1 case (5%) of lymphopenia, 1 case (5%) of cervical lymphadenopathy, 2 cases ( 10%) of vasculitis, 2 cases (10%) of pleuropulmonary involvement, 1 case (5%) of pericarditis and 1 case (5%) of chronic renal failure (CRF).
Conclusion :
Extra-articular manifestations in the course of rheumatoid arthritis are a frequent situation. These manifestations are sometimes serious, hence the benefit of carrying out their systematic screening.
