Abstract
Introduction :
Due to its frequency, mortality and morbidity, breast cancer represents a major public health problem in our country. The objective of this study was to determine the epidemiological and anatomopathological aspects of breast cancer at the anatomy and pathological cytology Laboratory of the National Hospital of Niamey.
Materials and methods :
This was a retrospective, descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study conducted from February 2020 to December 2023 at the pathology laboratory of the Niamey National Hospital. All reports with a histological diagnosis of breast cancer were included in this study.
Results :
The mean age was 46.1 years (range: 17–87 years), and females predominated in 96.6% of cases. Macroscopically, the tumor size was greater than or equal to 5 cm in 64.29% of cases. Histologically, all cases examined were carcinomas (100%). Invasive nonspecific breast carcinoma was the predominant histological type in 91.8% of cases, followed by lobular carcinoma in 2.4%. From a histoprognostic point of view, the cancers were grade II of Elston and Ellis in 58% of cases, pT3 stage in 41% of cases and pN0 in 32.7% of cases.
Conclusion :
Breast cancer affects young women in Niger. Further epidemiological studies are needed to better characterize them.
