Abstract

Introduction :
The provision of high-quality neonatal care is essential for a significant reduction in neonatal and infant mortality. This study aims to evaluate the quality of neonatal care in the neonatal unit of the Issaka Gazoby Maternity Hospital (MIG) in Niamey.

Methods :
This was a descriptive study involving prospective data collection on all live newborns cared for in the MIG's neonatal unit during the period from January 1 to March 31, 2025 (3 months). WHO quality indicators were used to calculate scores in four main areas: care for admission, care during hospitalization, discharge and follow-up planning, and evaluation of technical facilities.

Results :
Out of 1,265 newborns, the study revealed high standards of care. Overall care was of good quality in 92.56% of cases and records were well completed in 97.70% of cases. Immediate actions at birth (drying and suction) were performed in more than 93% of cases. Regarding discharge planning, advice was given to mothers and postnatal follow-up was performed in 80.79% of cases. Finally, the assessment of technical facilities and environmental hygiene was found to be in compliance with standards (100%).

Conclusion :
The WHO quality score assessment revealed some weaknesses at the Issaka Gazoby Maternity Hospital compared to international standards for neonatal care. However, applying the quality-of-care standards of our service to all health facilities in the country could significantly contribute to strengthening the health system and reducing neonatal morbidity and mortality in Niger.
