Abstract
Introduction :
Maternal mortality is still high in developing countries and more particularly in Benin. The improvement in the quality of care is accompanied by a gradual reduction in maternal deaths. Objective: Identify the dysfunctions in the management of maternal deaths at the Saint-Jean-de-Dieu Zone Hospital in Tanguiéta. Patients and study method: This was a retrospective descriptive and analytical study from 2015 to 2019. It was based on a review of the files of women received for complications related to pregnancy.
Results :
During the study period, 116 deaths were registered for 9,892 births, or an intra-hospital maternal mortality ratio was 1173 deaths per 100,000 Live Births. The mean age of the deceased women was 25.4 ± 6.9 years. The dysfunctions noted in the care of women victims of maternal deaths were the delay in the initial assessment of more than 15 minutes (p = 0.0007), the completion of additional examinations late (p = 0.0109), the etiological management without taking into account the SOU (Emergency Obstetric Care) protocol of the department (p = 0.0004), the therapeutic delay of more than 2 hours (p = 0.0127) the absence of monitoring (p <0.0001), the poor condition of the patient requiring a transfer to intensive care (p = 0.000007) and the delay of more than 60 min in the transfer to intensive care (p = 0.0494).
Conclusion :
The care of pregnant women at Tanguiéta hospital suffers from several shortcomings which must be corrected in order to reduce the high maternal mortality in this hospital.
