Abstract
Background :
Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) is a simple, rapid, and minimally invasive diagnostic tool, particularly valuable in low-resource settings. This study aimed to assess the experience of mass cytopuncture at the National Hospital of Zinder (HNZ), focusing on sample adequacy and lesion distribution.
Methods :
A retrospective, descriptive, and analytical study was conducted from August 2023 to August 2025. All thyroid and breast FNAC cases were included. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 21.
Results :
Among 519 cytopathological analyses, 144 (27.74 %) were FNAC of palpable masses. The mean age was 37 years, with a marked female predominance (93.1 %). The main sites were breast (60.4 %) and thyroid (35.4 %). Sample adequacy reached 98.6 %. The Bethesda 2023–2024 and IAC Yokohama systems were applied for thyroid and breast lesions, respectively. Overall, 70.1 % of cases corresponded to tumoral pathology, including 46.5 % malignant.
Conclusion :
FNAC at HNZ demonstrates excellent diagnostic reliability and technical performance. Implementing on-site evaluation (ROSE) and continuous cytopathology training would further enhance diagnostic accuracy and patient management.
