Abstract

Leprosy is a debilitating chronic infection caused by Mycobacterium leprae, also known as Hansen's bacillus, transmitted through the respiratory route during prolonged close contact with untreated leprosy patients. This work aim to describe the epidemiological and diagnostic aspects of leprosy in children.
Methods :
This was a retrospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2023. It was carried out in the departments of Sangha, Likouala, Niari, Plateaux, and Pointe-Noire.
Results :
A total of 1,979 cases of leprosy were recorded during the study period, of which 224 (11.31%) were children under 15 years of age. Of these, 75 (33.48%) were under six years old, 124 (55.35%) were boys, 158 (70.53%) resided in the Likouala department, and 155 (69.19%) presented with the multibacillary form.
Conclusion :
Leprosy affects older children, particularly in the Likouala department and in its multibacillary form.
