Abstract
Introduction :
Anemia in chronic renal failure is a complication commonly found in nephrology. The diagnosis is initially clinical and then confirmed by a complete blood count. The objective was to study the anemia profile in patients with chronic renal failure at the National Hospital in Zinder.
Patients and method :
This was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytic study with prospective data collection over a period of 6 months, from August 1, 2024, to January 31, 2025, include 68 patients in the nephrology/dialysis department of Zinder National Hospital. Data processing and analysis were performed using Excel and Epi Info version 7.2.0.1.
Results :
At the end of this study, the frequency of chronic renal failure associated with anemia was 21.24% (75/353) of all patients consulting and/or hospitalized. The average age was 49.16 ± 17.72 years, ranging from 15 to 98 years. The sex ratio was 2.23. Hypertension was the most common medical history among patients, accounting for 61.76% of cases, followed by diabetes in 20.58% of cases. Moderate anemia was observed in 58 patients, representing 85.29% of cases, with an average hemoglobin level of 7.6 ± 1.51 g/dL, ranging from 2.8 to 11.4 g/dL. Serum ferritin was measured in 68 patients, with 66 showing hyperferritinemia, and a mean level of 1179.59 ± 752.95 µg/L. Glomerular nephropathy was the most common etiology, identified in 40 patients (58.83%). The associations between anemia severity, age (p < 0.05), and death (p < 0.05) were statistically significant.
Conclusion :
This study shows that anemia is a common complication in all patients with chronic renal failure. The further the patient progresses to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), the more severe the anemia becomes.
