Abstract
Introduction :
Surgical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common procedure in adult surgery. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects of benign prostatic hyperplasia in the Tillabéry region.
Methodology :
This was a retrospective study covering the period from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2022 (4 years) involving patients who underwent surgery for BPH at the Tillabéry Regional Hospital Center.
Results :
The frequency of BPH was 9.23% of all abdominal surgery. The average age of patients was 69.90% (range: 50 to 90 years). The most affected age group was between 61 and 70 years, accounting for 43.4%. Patients from rural areas accounted for 76.6%. Urinary retention was the reason for consultation in 92% of cases. The prostate appeared benign on TR in 92% of cases. PSA was normal in 22.3% of cases. The average prostate volume on ultrasound was 95.58 cc. Isolated BPH accounted for 85% of cases. Inguinal hernia repair was the most common surgical procedure, accounting for 5.14%. The average length of postoperative hospitalization was 6.20 days (range : 1 to 14 days). Suppuration of the surgical wound was observed in 4%. Five deaths were recorded, representing 2.90%.
Conclusion :
BPH surgery is a common procedure at the Tillabéry Regional Hospital. It primarily affects elderly patients. Raising awareness about early diagnosis and treatment can reduce morbidity and mortality.
