Abstract
Introduction :
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained heart rhythm disorder in clinical practice. The diagnosis of AF should be confirmed by a conventional 12-lead ECG or an ECG strip showing AF for at least 30 seconds.
Objective :
describe the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic profiles of atrial fibrillation at the reference hospital of Maradi.
Methodology :
This is a descriptive prospective study over a period of 3 months from January to March 2022 in the cardiology department of the Maradi reference Were included patients seen in outpatients and hospitalization in whom the diagnosis of atrial fibrillation had been made by an electrocardiogram.
Results :
A total of 402 patients were seen during the study period, including 22 patients with atrial fibrillation, i.e. a hospital prevalence of 5.47% with a sex ratio (M/F) of 1.2. The mean age was 61.23±15.58 years. Cardiovascular risk factors were dominated by hypertension with 68.2%. Heart failure (63.66%) was the main circumstance of discovery. The most frequently found type was prolonged persistent AF in 31.81%. The mean CHA2DS2-VASc score was 3.17±1 with a high embolic risk of 77.27%. The prescribed antithrombotic treatment was dominated by long-term vitamin K antagonists in 45.5% of patients. The therapeutic strategy chosen was heart rate control and the molecules used were Beta blockers in 77.27% and amiodarone (9.1%). The mortality rate was 13.63%.
Conclusion :
This study allowed us to note that AF is a common arrhythmia in hospital responsible for significant mortality related to thromboembolic complications.
