Abstract

Introduction :
Vitamin A supplementation in young children remains an essential intervention, at least in the medium term, in a country like Niger where vitamin A deficiency is a public health problem and child mortality is very high. The objective of this study was to help improve knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding vitamin A supplementation among mothers/caregivers of children aged 6 to 59 months, health workers and community relays in the Urban Community. of Niamey (CUN) in 2018.

Method :
It is a descriptive study of transverse type carried out in communes I and II of Niamey. The sample consists of 192 mothers / babysitters, 40 community relays and 40 health workers. The choice of boroughs, neighborhoods and households was made by a random survey in three (3) degree clusters. Data collection tools, namely the questionnaire and the interview guides, were used to collect the information. The collected data was processed manually and using Epi info software version 3.5.4, Excel and Word.

Results :
The analysis of the results shows that 22% of mothers / caregivers have no formal education and 53.1% said that the child should receive the dose of vitamin A from birth. Those who thought that the child should receive vitamin A twice a year represent 68.2% while of the 27% claiming to know the consequences of vitamin A deficiency, 39% think that the child is at risk of being paralyze in case of deficiency. As for health workers, 12.5% ignore the target for vitamin A supplementation, 12.5% do not know what vitamin A supplementation is for. Parents' awareness in case of refusal was the attitude of 70% Relays.

Conclusion :
A sensitization (door to door) of mothers / caregivers remains necessary as well as the training of relays and health workers on vitamin A desire to improve the acceptance of vitamin A supplementation.
