Abstract
Objective :
The aim of this work was to describe the epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic and evolutionary characteristics of open leg fractures at the Regional Hospital Center of Tahoua (Niger).
Materials and methods :
This was a six-month cross-sectional single-center prospective study (January 1, 2021 to July 1, 2021), at the Tahoua Regional Hospital Center. It included all patients with an open diaphyseal leg fracture confirmed on X-ray and treated in the department.
Results :
thirty-three cases of open leg fractures were collected. Most of the cases were men (27 cases, 81.82%) with a sex ratio of 4.5. The average age was 28.16 years (extremes: 6 and 65 years). The etiology was a road accident in 29 cases; (87.88%). According to the Gustilo and Anderson classification, there were 13 cases (39.4%) of type I, 16 cases (48.48%) of type II, 3 cases (9.09%) of type IIIa and 1 case (3. 03%) Type IIIc. The fractures were in the middle third in most cases (63.64%, n=21 cases). According to the type of line, we noted 39.4% (n=13) of transverse line, in 27.27% (n=9) the presence of a 3rd fragment, in 21.21% (n=7) of line oblique and in 12.12% (n=4) of comminuted line. Our pa undergone plate osteosynthesis in 13 cases (39.4%), intramedullary nailing in 9 cases (27.27%), an external fixator in 6 cases (18.18%), Elastic Centromedullary Pinning and Stable (ECMES) in 3 cases (9.09%) and a cast in 2 cases (6.06%).
Conclusion :
Open leg fracture is a daily problem in traumatology with a significant socio-economic impact, as it occurs most often in young working men. Their etiology is dominated by accidents on public roads, hence the need for road safety measures.
