Abstract
Introduction :
Blind pleural biopsy is a technique of exploration of the pleura for the search of etiologies of pleurisy. The objective of our work is to show the interest of this examination in the research of the etiologies of exudative pleurisy.
Materials and methods :
This is a prospective descriptive and cross-sectional study carried out in the pneumo-phthisiology department of the national hospital of Zinder from June 2018 to June 2022. Patients were included as they came to the department for consultation or hospitalization during the study period. Abrams needle was the instrument used for pleural biopsy.
Results :
Sixty-eight (68) patients were included, 43 males and 25 females, a sex ratio of 1.72. The mean age of the patients was 49 years with extremes from 16 to 70 years. 32 patients (47%) were between 25 and 49 years of age. The HIV test was positive for HIV1 in 6 patients (9%). The macroscopic appearance of the pleural fluid was mainly light yellow (76%) and hemorrhagic (26%). Pleural biopsy was significantly more cost-effective in subjects younger than 60 years of age and HIV-negative (p < 0.05). Tuberculosis etiologies were found in 39 patients (57%) and neoplasia in 10 patients (15%).
Conclusion :
Pleural biopsy is an important examination in the etiological research of exudative pleurisy, especially in our context of high prevalence of tuberculosis. It allows a better rationalization of the use of anti-tuberculosis drugs.
