Abstract
Objective :
To report outcomes of inguinal hernia repair according Lichtenstein and Desarda procedures.
Method :
This was a 28-month prospective and descriptive study from 01 September 2015 to 31 December 2017 at national hospital of Niamey, taking into account patients operated to inguinal hernia according to both techniques. The evaluation of the results was based on the chronic pain and or recurrence.
Results :
the series included 121 patients including 119 men (98.3%) and 2 women (1.7%). The average age was 47,9 years old within a frame range of 17 to 90 years old. The Desarda technique was performed in 81 patients (66,9%) and the Lichtenstein technique in 40 patients (33,1%). The Desarda technique was the most used in younger patients (17 to 50 years old), whereas the Lichtenstein technique was more used in the elderly (over 50 years) and those with a recurrence. At 1 postoperative month, the Lichtenstein technique had more pain with 2 cases versus 1 case. The case of seroma was observed in Lichtenstein group. There was no pain and no recurrence after 12 mounth of decline in the two groups.
Conclusion :
The outcomes of inguinal hernias repair according to the techniques of Lischteinten and Desarda are satisfactory. In our context, where prostheses are sometimes lacking, we can recommend Desarda autoplasty for well-selected patients.
