Abstract

Introduction :
Uveitis are potentially blinding pathologies. The objective of our study was to determine the epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and prognostic aspects of uveitis at the National Hospital of Zinder.

Materials and methods :
We conducted a retrospective and descriptive study on the medical records of all patients diagnosed and followed for uveitis in the Ophthalmology Department of the National Hospital of Zinder over a period of 5 years from April 2017 April 2022.

Results :
A total of 127 patients were collected. The gender distribution was substantially equal and the average age was 40.73 years. The hospital frequency of uveitis was 0.21%. Eye pain was the most common reason for consultation (51.97%), followed by loss of visual acuity (46.61%). Uveitis was unilateral in 81.88%, bilateral in 18.12% of cases. According to the classification of the International Uveitis Study Group (IUSG), uveitis were anterior in 45.67% (n=58), intermediate in 19.68% (n=25), posterior in 29.92% (n= 38) and total (panuveitis) in 4.72% (n=6). In 83.46% of cases, no etiology was found. After treatment, remission was mostly complete in 52.76% and complications were noted in 33.07% of cases.

Conclusion :
This study notes a relatively low prevalence of uveitis which could be due not only to insufficient diagnosis and/or archiving of data, but also to certain genetic or environmental factors of which only previous prospective studies can edify us.
