Abstract
Objective :
The objective of our study was to investigate antiretroviral (ARV) adherence among patients living with HIV (PvVIV).
Methodology :
This was a cross-sectional, analytical, descriptive study that was conducted from June 5 to September 10, 2021. Adherence was assessed using a questionnaire. Patients were considered compliant if they kept their appointments, if they respected their medication schedules and if they missed less than one dose.
Results :
A total of 200 patients were included. Women were strongly represented in the study (72.5%, n=145). The mean age was 43 years with a range of 21 to 72 years. The most prescribed treatment was TDF-3TC-EFV and 11% (n=22) of our sample was taking a traditional treatment. We noted that 64% (n=32) of the study population had missed zero doses. Poor compliance was 35% (n=70) with the main reason being negligence with 47% (n=23), travel 15% (n=7), illness 12% (n=6) and forgetfulness 10% (n=5). An overview of the CD4 lymphocyte count confirmed the efficacy of ARVs in adherent patients.
Conclusion :
In view of this study, there are difficulties in adherence to treatment with antiretrovirals. Therefore, the involvement of health care personnel in the reinforcement of therapeutic education (TE), and the support of the family could contribute to the improvement of adherence in these patients.
