Abstract
Introduction :
The COVID-19 pandemic complicates global public health challenges with already pre-existing epidemics such as that of the human immunodeficiency virus.
Objective :
To study the epidemiological-clinical and evolutionary aspects of COVID-19 in people living with HIV (PvHIV) in the Infectious Diseases department of the Point G university hospital center.
Materials and method :
Cross-sectional study with retrospective collection of April 1st 2020 to March 31, 2022 on the files of hospitalized PLHIV. The data was analyzed using SPSS software.
Results :
Out of 282 hospitalized PLHIV, we collected 32 cases of COVID-19, i.e. 11.3%. The average age was 40.94 ± 10. Women accounted for 59.4%. The deterioration of the general state was the reason most found on admission (62.5%). Cough, asthenia and fever were the most frequent functional signs in 40.9%, 25% and 15.6% respectively. Oral thrush was the most found physical sign (84.3%). Half (n = 16) of the patients were at WHO clinical stage III. Severe immunosuppression (CD4 < 100 cells/mm3) was present in 5 of our patients. The average time for diagnosis of COVID-19 in hospital was 9.9 days. In 12.5% of our patients intensive care was necessary. The lethality was 59%.
Conclusion :
The deterioration of the general state was the most frequent reason for admission. Some of our patients needed intensive care.
