Abstract

Introduction :
Severe acute malnutrition contributes significantly to infant and child mortality. In Niger, the overall prevalence of malnutrition was 12.7%. The objective of this study was to study the predictive factors of the occurrence of acute malnutrition in infants aged 6 to 24 months.

Material and methods :
This was a descriptive cross-sectional study with prospective data collection. The study population consisted of infants aged 6 to 24 months as the primary target. The data had been collected by questioning the parents of these children and by clinical examination of the patients, then supplemented through the exploitation of the hospitalization files of the patients. The proportions were compared using the Pearson Chisquare statistical test at the 5% significance level and a 95% CI.

Results :
The prevalence was 51.96%. The male gender was in the majority with 54.09%. The age group 12 to 24 months was the most represented with 53.38%, the average age was 13.45 months. Parents were of low socioeconomic level in 53.38% of patients. The conduct of food diversification was bad in 56.59%. The low socioeconomic level of the parents, poor dietary diversification, fever, diarrhea and vomiting were significant risk factors for the occurrence of severe acute malnutrition in children (OR> 1, p-value <0 .05 with 95% CI).

Conclusion :
Severe acute malnutrition remains a public health problem in our hospitals/Niger. It is associated with several risk factors including malaria, diarrhea, fever or poor dietary diversification.
