Abstract

Introduction :
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are a major public health problem. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of MRSA strains at Zinder National Hospital.

Methodology :
This was a cross-sectional study, running from June 1 to November 30, 2021. Staphylococcus strains were identified using conventional methods. Antibiotic susceptibility was studied using the agar diffusion technique, and MRSA/SASM was interpreted according to the diameter of the zone of inhibition around a 30µg cefoxitin disk, as recommended in CASFM 2021 V 1.0.

Results :
At the end of this study, sixteen (16) strains of staphylococci were isolated, ten (10) of which were S. aureus strains. Resistance to cefoxitin was detected in four (4) strains, representing a prevalence of 40% of MRSA. The majority of MRSA came from outpatients, with a rate of 75%. These MRSA were isolated from pus (50%), vaginal secretions (25%) and semen (25%). Penicillin G was inactive on 100% of Staphylococcus aureus. MRSA were 100% resistant to fluoroquinolones and 75% to aminoglycosides and tetracycline respectively; 50% were resistant to erythromycin and 25% to clindamycin, cotrimoxazole and fusidic acid respectively. Chloramphenicol was active against 100% of MRSA.

Conclusion :
For one of the very first studies of its kind in Niger, the prevalence of MRSA, whether community- or hospital-acquired, is a reality, with high resistance to the other families of antibiotics available, despite the low rate of isolates. Measures must be taken to limit the emergence and spread of multi-resistant bacterial strains.
