Abstract

Objective :
to determine the prevalence of depigmentation and the associated factors among women in the Ouando and Ahidahomè markets in Porto-Novo.

Method :
This was a descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study. Data was collected through a questionnaire administered to women present at the market during a semi-structured interview. The data entered in Epi Data was analyzed with SPSS 20.0. The association with factors related to depigmentation was measured by a prevalence ratio (PR). A p value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results :
A total of 267 women participated in the study. They were between 14 and 70 years old with an average of 34.6 ± 10.6 years. More than a third of the women interviewed (37.4%) were illiterate and more than half (55.8%) were of Christian religion. The prevalence of the use of depigmenting products among these women was 75.3% (n = 201) CI = [68.6 - 78.4]), that of depigmentation was 50.9% (n = 139 ) (95% CI = [43.4 - 54.6]). The use of depigmenting products increases the prevalence (PR = 3.6; 95% CI [1.79 - 7.40]). This prevalence of depigmentation was also related to the combination of ointments and other products (PR = 2.92; 95% CI PR = [1.33 - 6.37]). However, having a secondary or higher education relative to illiteracy reduces the risk of depigmentation (PR = 0.429; 95% CI PR = [0.208 - 0.88]).

Conclusion :
This study shows the extent of the phenomenon of depigmentation as well as the factors associated with it among women in the Ouando and Ahidahomè markets in the city of Porto-Novo.
