Abstract
Introduction :
Biological disturbances during malaria may contribute to the diagnosis of this pathology. The aim of this study was to describe the haematological and biochemical abnormalities observed during malaria in the Department of Medicine. Patients and Method: This was a retrospective descriptive study lasting 15 months from October 1, 2019 to December 31, 2020. It involved all patients consulting for malaria in the Department of Medicine, who had undergone a haematological and biochemical workup including, among others, haemogram, urea, creatinine, cholesterol, triglyceridemia, blood glucose, CRP, during the study period.
Results :
A total of 2417 patients consulted the Department of Medicine during the study period, of whom 146 met our inclusion criteria, i.e. an average frequency of 6% (146/2417). Clinical signs on admission were dominated by fever (95%) and headache (77%). Mean parasite density was 1383.21± (extremes: 204 and 2598 parasites/μl). Median hemoglobin was 10.3g/dl, with extremes of 3.7g/dl and 14.9 g/dl. Almost a third (32.35%) of patients had severe anemia. The mean white blood cell count was 6125 ± 4265/mm3. The median thrombocyte count was 113,000 G/l. The most characteristic biochemical disturbances were hypercreatininemia (40.41%), hyperuricemia (27.40%) and hypocholesterolemia (26.04%). CRP was elevated in all our patients, with a mean of 40±24 mg/l.
Conclusion :
This study confirms the existence of biological abnormalities in malaria. The abnormalities observed are mainly anemia, thrombocytopenia, hypercreatininemia and hypocholesterolemia. The simultaneous or separate presence of these abnormalities associated with fever should raise the suspicion of malaria in the Bobo-Dioulasso peripheral zone, and lead to appropriate urgent therapy.
