Abstract

Introduction :
Diabetes is a chronic disease whose discovery turns the patient's life upside down and can lead to refusal or poor follow-up of treatment.

Objective :
to describe the psychological factors of therapeutic adherence in Togolese diabetic patients.

Materials and method :
The study was carried out in the Internal Medicine department of the Sylvanus Olympio University Hospital (SO), from January 2016 to June 2016. It was prospective and included diabetic patients known for at least one (1) year. Questionnaires were used to collect data on the patient's relationships with his family circle, his treatment, his caregiver and the experience of the disease. These data were analyzed with the statistical software Sphinx; then a content analysis with the logical-semantic method.

Results :
of the 160 patients surveyed, 55.6% felt abandoned by their families, 57.5% experienced difficulties related to the cost of drugs, 75% said they lacked an explanation for their illness, 73.1% experienced their illness as disabilities. In addition, patients who felt that they lacked an explanation for diabetes, encountered difficulties in complying with the followup (60%), medication (53.75%) and those who experienced the disease as a handicap, 89 encountered difficulties in respect the follow-up (58.75%), medication (56.87%), the hygiene and dietetic measures (41.87%) and were tired of treatment (40%).

Conclusion :
psychological factors influence therapeutic adherence in diabetics in Togo. It is therefore important to take this into account for effective treatment.
