Abstract

Introduction :
A serious, non-contagious and non-immunizing neurological disease, tetanus is caused by a telluric bacterium: Clostridium tetani. Our objective was to describe the cases of tetanus hospitalized in the infectious diseases department of the national hospital of Niamey and to improve their management.

Materials and methods :
This is a prospective study that took place from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2019 about 22 cases.

Results :
The hospital prevalence of tetanus in the infectious diseases department was 1.07%. The average age of the patients was 32.55 years. The most represented age group was that of 35-45 (27.27%). The male/female sex ratio was 10. Half of the patients were represented by farmers. The socio-economic level was considered low in 81.82% of patients. The portal of entry was integumentary in 68.18% of patients. The average incubation period was 12.41, mostly between 7-14 days (45.45%). The average duration of invasion was 46.36 hours. The majority of patients (n=9, or 40.91%) had a Dakar score of 3. Fourteen patients, or 63.64%, were in stage II of the Mollaret classification. Complications were found in 36.36% of patients being hospitalized with respiratory complications at the top. A lethality of 27.27% was observed. The duration of hospitalization was more than 14 days in 59.09% of cases.

Conclusion :
Sub-Saharan Africa pays a heavy price for this disease; vaccination of young women and universal vaccination against tetanus will reverse the trend.
