Abstract
Introduction :
Traumatic limb amputation is a mutilating injury that primarily affects young, active individuals, and its consequences can be functional and/or psychological. The objective of this study is to describe the epidemiological aspects and the outcomes of patients who have undergone amputation due to traumatic causes.
Patients and Methods :
This was a 5-year retrospective cross-sectional study spanning from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2025, with follow-up until March 2026, conducted in the surgery department of the Gaoua Regional Hospital in Burkina Faso. The socio-professional, clinical, therapeutic, and follow-up data of patients admitted to the department for amputations due to traumatic causes were analyzed.
Results :
One hundred and twenty-seven patients (113 men and 14 women) were included. The majority were artisanal gold miners (N=88) and traders (N=28). The mean age was 44.58 years. The mean admission delay was 1.44 days. The etiologies were dominated by accidents at gold mining sites (67 cases) and road traffic accidents (36 cases). The most frequent clinical contexts were polytrauma and artisanal mine blast hand injuries with polymorphic lesions. All patients underwent stump regularization or a salvage amputation. Complications were noted in 11 patients. At a mean follow-up of 24 months, 87.07% of the patients reported having at least an acceptable quality of life.
Conclusion :
Major limb amputations for traumatic causes are frequent in our context, especially with the rise of artisanal gold mining. It is an event that diminishes professional productivity and often leaves the patient handicapped due to the complex, polymorphic nature of the initial lesions.
