Abstract
Introduction :
Sickle cell disease is an autosomal recessive hemoglobinopathy characterized by hemolytic anemia and vaso-occlusive crises. The blood count is one of the key biological examinations in the diagnosis and follow-up of sickle cell disease. The aim of our study was to analyze blood count parameters in sickle cell patients followed up at Maradi Regional Hospital. Matériels and Method: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study with prospective data collection carried out in sickle cell patients followed up at the Maradi Regional Hospital Center, over a 6-month period (November 2021 to April 2022). All hemoglobin electrophoresis-confirmed sickle cell patients who consulted during the study period were included. A complete blood count (CBC) was performed in all patients.
Results :
A total of 55 patients were included, with a mean age of 6.3 ± 2.33 years (0.5 and 14 years) and a sex ratio of 1.5. The homozygous SS form predominated (81.82%) and the double heterozygous SC form accounted for 18.18%. The mean hemoglobin level was 6.87 g/dl (1.5 and 11 g/dl); the anemia was normocytic in 69% of patients and microcytic in 31%; it was severe, moderate and mild in 38.18%, 54.55% and 7.27% of cases respectively. The mean leukocyte count was 23.11 G/L (49.5 and 5.9 G/L), with hyperleukocytosis in 87.27% of cases. Platelets averaged 375.86 G/L (82.5 and 885 G/L), with thrombocytosis in 29.09% of cases. Our study found no association between vaso-occlusive crises and leukocyte and platelet counts (p > 0.05).
Conclusion :
The results of our study are similar to those often described in the African literature. Better knowledge of blood count parameters will enable us to manage sickle cell crises more effectively.
