Abstract

Introduction :
Pupils and students constitute a population overexposed to the risk of mental disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of mental disorders in students attending the psychiatric department of the Niamey National Hospital.

Patients and methods :
This was a retrospective cross-sectional study conducted over a 3 year period from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2023 in the psychiatry department of the Niamey National Hospital. All pupils and students treated in the psychiatry department whose records could be used were included.

Results :
A total of 135 patients were included in the study, representing an overall frequency of 0.74% of admissions to the department. The mean age was 21±4.58 years. The sex ratio M/F was 1.28. 65.93% of patients were in the public sector. In 52.60% of cases, they had completed higher education. Patients had a personal (32.59%) and family (29.63%) psychiatric history. Consumption of psychoactive substances was found in 25.93% of cases. Pathologies on the schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders accounted for 30.37%, and substance related and addictive disorders for 25.93%. The pathology had an impact on the academic curriculum in 91.85% of patients, with a drop-out rate of 8.06%. Socially, 81.48% of patients were victims of stigmatization. Traditional therapy was used as first-line treatment in 84.44% of cases. Hospitalization was sought in 29.63% of cases. Psychological treatment was combined with medication in 71.11% of patients. Progress was favorable in 56.29% of cases. Those lost to follow-up accounted for 31.11%.

Conclusion :
The negative consequences of mental disorders in pupils and students impact on their academic and social integration. Psychiatric antecedents and the use of psychoactive substances are often to blame. Measures to protect and promote mental health need to be reinforced in public health policy.
