Abstract

Introduction :
Liver abscesses are serious, potentially fatal infections that are common in developing countries. In Côte d'Ivoire, recent data remain limited. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical, therapeutic, and evolutionary aspects of liver abscesses at the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Department (SMIT) of the Treichville University Hospital. Patients and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with retrospective data collection conducted from January 2015 to September 2019, including patients aged ≥18 years hospitalized for liver abscesses. Sociodemographic, clinical-biological, radiological, therapeutic, and evolutionary data were collected from medical records. The analysis was performed using Epi Info 7 software.

Results :
A total of 30 cases of liver abscesses were included. The mean age was 41.8 ± 11.8 years, with a predominance of males (sex ratio 2.3). Comorbidity was found in 86.7% of patients. The mean time to consultation was 20 days. Right upper quadrant pain (90%) and fever (80%) were the main clinical signs. The abscess was mostly single (73.3%) and located in the right lobe (63.3%). Amoebic etiology predominated (60%). Medical treatment alone was effective in 56.7% of cases. The outcome was favorable in 90% of patients, with a mortality rate of 10%.

Conclusion :
Liver abscesses remain rare but serious. Their prognosis depends on early diagnosis and appropriate management. Prospective multicenter studies are needed to improve their management.
