Abstract

Introduction :
Infectious diseases are common in correctional settings but remain poorly documented in Burkina Faso. This study aimed to describe the frequency, diagnosis and management of presumed infectious diseases among consulting detainees at the Ouagadougou Remand and Correctional Facility (MACO).

Material and methods :
exhaustive descriptive cross-sectional study conducted at the MACO infirmary from 26 December 2024 to 20 January 2025, covering the 400 detainees who presented a presumed infectious disease.

Results :
out of 567 recorded consultations, 400 concerned a presumed infectious disease, a proportion of 70.5%. Mean age was 30 ± 9 years; 89% were male. The entry medical examination had not been performed in 65.2% of detainees. Pulmonary diseases were the most frequent (37.3%), ahead of ear, nose, throat (ENT) and stomatological diseases (24.8%). A physical examination was performed in only 8% of consultations, and a paraclinical work-up in 6% of cases. Antibiotic therapy was prescribed in 73.3% of detainees, exclusively on a probabilistic basis.

Conclusion :
presumed infectious diseases are common among consulting detainees at the MACO, with a predominance of respiratory conditions. The entry medical examination, although mandatory, is not systematic, and most diagnoses rely on interview alone. Strengthening entry screening and the capacities of the MACO health service appears necessary.
